Welcome to First Grade

Among many first grade milestones are becoming an independent reader and losing the first tooth. The lively atmosphere in the classroom, on the playground, during field trips, and at special events such as planting daffodils with a special 12th grade friend make this year one of growth socially, emotionally, and mentally.

Under the direction of their teachers students create numerous works of art and perform holiday carols around the campus. They are presented to the school family with their 12th grade friend as they decorate the school Christmas tree with their hand-made ornaments.

Parents and the entire Lower School enjoy the musical play the first grade presents about American history with the assistance of parents as costumers, the music teacher as director, and teachers as prompters.

Other highlights include trips to the pumpkin farm, puppet shows, and a tour of historic Athens. First graders serve as active members of the school community, always quick to send thank you notes to speakers and other classes who share performances with them.

Their service to the school is particularly apparent when the bank of daffodils by the stream blooms each spring, signifying the growth of the children during their first grade year.
