Welcome to Fourth Grade

Fourth graders mature rapidly during the school year. They continue to work hard to please the adults in their lives, and the approval of their peers becomes more important.

The fourth grade program offers many opportunities for students to learn to develop social skills and to engage in individual and group decision-making, while gaining self-confidence and learning to think independently and critically. They assume the responsibility for opening car doors for the younger students at the opening and closing of each school day.

Academic adventures include a Biography Breakfast at which they impersonate important characters from history, creating simple machines in Science with a public exhibition of their work, and dissecting a real sheep’s eye with a partner. Students learn about geography and cooperation with classmates through a simulated international journey in which group decision-making is combined with information gathering.

Each year the students take an art field trip to museums or architecturally interesting buildings in the area. A highlight of the year is their first overnight field trip to the Atlanta Zoo’s Night Crawler program where they tour the zoo after dark and spend the night there with their teachers.

Fourth graders combine their writing skills and their sense of humor to collaborate on the script for a musical performance each year.
