Fourth Grade Language Arts

An integrated approach to listening, speaking, reading, and writing is the core of the language arts program at Athens Academy. Students in fourth grade are taught a combination of reading skills and strategies, English grammar and mechanics, and spelling. An appreciation for various types of literature is combined with reading content for the social studies units.

Students learn to read critically and for pleasure as they are surrounded by books in their classroom and the Media Center. Class novels are read both in small groups and in whole class instructional groups.

The writing process is the core of the fourth grade year as the students participate in Writing Workshop. At times, writing tasks are coordinated with a particular social studies or science project.
