Fourth Grade Mathematics

Fourth grade mathematics carries the four basic operations into estimation and mental math. Problem-solving and estimation become tools for practical, real world use of mathematics. Students work with addition and subtraction, algorithms to five digits with regrouping, and learn to multiply with up to three digits; long division with two digits follows.

Measurement with both metric and customary units is applied in many ways in both the mathematics and science classes for fourth graders. Lessons combine perimeter and area with measurement, multiplication, and addition, giving problems of increasing complexity. Further work with fractions and decimals completes the year, providing a solid mathematical foundation for Middle School studies to come.
