Second Grade Science

The science curriculum uses the scientific method as its foundation; questions are raised, hypotheses are explored through hands-on learning experiences, and conclusions are reached. The students visit the science center weekly to work with a science resource teacher; they also study science in the classroom. The content covers three basic concepts: life, Earth, and physical sciences.

Topics covered include bones and muscles, reptiles and amphibians, desert and grassland habitats, communicable diseases and germs, nutrition, water safety, clouds, the water cycle, rock and fossil formation, and the characteristics and changes in states of matter. Second grade students are required to write their first research paper. This process is started at school with the gathering of resources and information with an emphasis on using available texts and the Internet.
