Welcome to Third Grade


Third graders continue to develop skills and habits acquired in earlier grades and are encouraged to be responsible, eager learners. Being able to read independently leads third graders to many new intellectual challenges.

The curriculum includes novels and biographies to accompany experiences in social studies and science as well as language arts.

Brain development occurring at this age allows for increased sophistication of critical thinking in mathematics and other areas.

The spontaneity and sense of humor of third graders is enjoyed by their peers and teachers and keeps discussions lively. A sense of fairness is strongly evident at this age and relationships with friends are very important to them.

The chrysalis and butterfly study in the fall is an appropriate illustration of this level as third graders begin to emerge as young scientists, writers, readers, and scholars.
