Third Grade Language Arts

The first semester of third grade language arts immerses students in various forms of literature and a study of different purposes for reading. They review word attack skills, practice fluency, read for meaning, and work on increasing comprehension as the material becomes more challenging.

Students read several class novels, teachers read books aloud, and students enjoy using the school and classroom libraries for pleasure reading.

The reading program is carefully integrated with writing skills, including grammar, writing for meaning, narrative writing, and learning about a writer’s voice. Regular spelling and vocabulary lessons enhance students’ writing skills.

During the second semester, students study through reading and writing workshops, following Athens Academy’s writing process curriculum. At the end of the school year, third graders take the Writing Assessment Program (WrAP) test, their first experience with a timed writing test evaluated by outside readers.
