Lower School Physical Fitness

The goal of physical education at Athens Academy is to develop physically educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity. Physical wellness is a major emphasis in the physical education curriculum in Lower School.

Changes in the body that occur as a result of physical activity, nutrition, and rest are discussed at the developmentally appropriate level. Students learn proper social interaction, problem-solving, and leadership skills through team and individual sports. Each student in the class also learns personal goal-setting along with respect for the unique abilities of others.

Seasonal sport skills and rules are taught throughout the year and each spring all students participate in the Presidential Fitness Tests. Students complete the testing program outlined by the President's Fitness Challenge. Students are scored based upon age and gender norms for students across the United States.
