Second Grade
Second grade is an important time for students as they master new skills and build on the knowledge acquired in preschool and first grade. They are excited about learning new things and are proud of being able to read chapter books. Their sense of humor becomes more sophisticated and riddles and jokes become very popular. We see this in their presentations to the class during such projects as the fairy tales video and the millinery confections created to represent local historical figures in Hats Off to Famous Georgians.
A field trip to the Fernbank Science Center in Atlanta culminates their first research report on dinosaurs and fossils. This project includes using the internet to gather and evaluate information. Working as a group, the class presents a musical play each year, entertaining their schoolmates, teachers, parents, and grandparents. The second grade year is one of great growth as students build confidence and learn good work habits as they transition to the third grade and its increasing challenges.
