Global Isssues in Geography
In this issues-centered course, students study specific topics in great depth. This is not a traditional geography course, but rather a class where in-depth analysis of people, places, and issues brings knowledge and understanding to the students about topics that are relevant and pertinent to their lives. The major issues of study are: Introduction to Geography, Terrorism, War, Ethnic Conflict - Arab- Israel conflict, Weapons Proliferation, Famine, Pestilence and Population Explosion, Human Rights, Communism and Capitalism, United Nations, and Global Economy. The curriculum integrates discussions, current events, historical events, group research, individual research, and analytical thinking. Students write a formal research paper as well as other shorter essays and research projects. These activities allow them to delve into the issues and develop their skills at researching and writing a significant paper. Emphasis is placed on being critical thinkers for all content throughout the year. This enables students to begin to formulate their own opinions based on evaluating many sides of complex ideas.
