Eighth Grade Science
Eighth Grade Physical Science involves a hands-on approach to discovering concepts and ideas within three scientific disciplines – geology, chemistry, and physics. In geology, we learn how rocks and minerals are the pages on which the history of the Earth is written. Within geology, we study the plate tectonics theory which encapsulates how the Earth works and the far reaching effects on climate and life. Chemistry incorporates the behavior of matter, a look into the intricacy of the atom, and chemical reactions and bonding between elements. Physics in 8th grade emphasizes the motion of objects, analyzing their speed and acceleration.Making science challenging, interesting, and fun is the goal. An inquiry approach with many labs and activities is used to engage students in learning. Investigating the outdoors on campus analyzing rocks to determine the environmental history of north central Georgia, classifying everyday objects such as dish soap and sand as substances or mixtures, or creating courses for Hot Wheels cars to determine their acceleration through the track are some examples of inquiry we use in 8th grade science.
