Language Arts in Fifth Grade

Students in fifth grade are immersed in literature through a variety of class novels and independent reading. Reading comprehension skills, elements of literature, and personal connections are emphasized through response journals, class discussions, and small group activities. Writing instruction is based on the writing process in a workshop setting. This format includes teacher led mini-lessons, one-on-one conferences, revisions, editing, and the use of writer’s notebooks.

Grammar and vocabulary are important elements in this class and are taught in conjunction with reading and writing skills. Laptops in the classroom assist with revising and editing, helping students become authors. They share their work with parents in an end-of-the-year Writers’ Forum.
