Mathematics in Fifth Grade

Fifth grade math builds on elementary math studies to provide students with a solid foundation of mathematical concepts. These include number sense, mastery of the four operations of whole numbers, fractions and decimals, measurement systems, basic algebra, and classifying and measuring geometric figures. Vocabulary is an integral part of the curriculum.

Fifth grade math places a strong emphasis on problem solving by adapting and applying a variety of appropriate strategies and continued reflection on the process. Confidence with competence is stressed throughout the year. The goal in fifth grade is for students to see mathematics as an exciting, useful and creative field of study.
