Welcome to Sixth Grade

Friendships are very important to sixth graders as they mature and share common interests with different class members. Getting to school early to talk to friends, laughing together over silly things at lunch, and playing various games on the breezeway during breaks are very important parts of a sixth grade day.

Sixth graders become much more independent in managing their classroom responsibilities and in allotting time and dedication to homework. Students also lead their parent conferences twice a year, setting personal academic goals with their parents and teachers.

Group activities such as the special two-night trip to Savannah in the spring combine their growing academic and social skills. They step back in time at a living history museum on a plantation, tour Fort Pulaski, ride a trolley through Savannah’s beautiful squares, ride a riverboat, and even learn to square dance.

Fine arts classes include drawing and painting, drama, band, and orchestra opportunities, while physical education classes set individual fitness goals for each student and teach different sports.

Services to the school and the community include cleaning their classrooms and the lunchroom, leading the Middle School recycling effort, and collecting Christmas gifts for the Salvation Army.
