Sixth Grade Language Arts

Sixth grade language arts encourages students to assume the role of readers and writers by combining the study of literature, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary in a workshop-based classroom.

Students read and write daily. Class novels provide a shared literature experience as students explore characters, themes, and plot.

Reader response journals are used to promote reading comprehension skills and analytical thinking as teachers respond to student writing with personal comments and suggestions. As writers, students explore a variety of genres including narrative and expository pieces. Teachers provide mini-lessons and one-on-one conferences as students work their way through the writing process.

Students strive to use correct mechanics such as punctuation, capitalization, and spelling, as well as good sentence structure. Laptops in the classrooms assist with revising and editing. In an environment full of rich models and immediate feedback about their own work, readers and writers flourish.
