Welcome to Middle School (Grades 5-8)
The Middle School includes grades five through eight. The school instructional day is from 8:10 a.m.-3:20 p.m. and introduces new fields of study and interest and reinforces fundamental skills. Athens Academy believes that the Middle School student is ready to be challenged, so broader and more rigorous aspects of learning are presented. Middle School students begin independent research, including note taking, outlining, and library work. Teachers emphasize the conciseness of written expression, vocabulary, and the depth of the investigation. Essay writing skills and attention to vocabulary and English grammar are developed throughout the middle school years. Pre-algebra and Algebra I classes are taught in the Middle School as the student's abstract thinking ability matures. Foreign language opportunities are also available with instruction in French, Latin, and Spanish.

The Middle School faculty are specialists and professionals in their fields of study. The teachers are noted for their interest in and special understanding of the unique needs of early adolescents.
The Middle School has several specialist teachers and classes included in its curriculum. Students receive regular instruction in drama, studio art, and physical education. Instrumental and string instruction are available to every student on both the beginner and intermediate level.
Life in the Middle School includes Wednesday morning chapel, Fabulous Friday programs, service activities, literary magazines, and class dances and parties, all of which are designed by age group. Special field trips are a part of the curriculum for each grade. Inter-scholastic athletic competition occurs in the seventh and eighth grade levels in seven different sports. During the Middle School years, Athens Academy students develop skills essential for success in the Upper School and life beyond. Emphasis is placed upon individual responsibility, traditional values, independent thinking, and creativity. Laying foundations and providing challenges are the principal goals of the Middle School.
