Welcome to Prefirst (Kindergarten)
The Prefirst program at Athens Academy is a five-day-a-week program. The day begins at 8:10 a.m. and dismisses at 1:30 p.m. "Stay and Play" is available from 1:30-3:20 p.m. at no additional charge. A fee-based Extended Day program is available from 3:20-5:45 p.m. Regular after school enrichment classes in areas such as cooking, crafts, karate, and other areas are offered throughout the year.
The Prefirst curriculum promotes a love of reading and learning. The language arts program focuses on phonemic awareness, vocabulary, reading comprehension strategies, and the development of writing skills through handwriting and the writing process. Mathematics is integrated into the daily routine and provides opportunities for students to work with manipulative materials. Math concepts include problem solving, numeration, patterning, geometry, measurement, addition and subtraction, money, and time.
In science, students explore life, earth, and physical sciences. A hands-on approach is incorporated in lessons as students utilize their natural curiosity and develop an understanding of how science relates to everyday life. Social studies units stress the importance of good citizenship. Students learn about how our government works by studying famous Americans in history and the symbols of America. Activities such as field trips and special classes in art, music, physical education, and science enhance the regular classroom experiences.
