Class of 2009 Accomplishments
Forty-five seniors were offered over $4.1 million in merit scholarship awards, not including the HOPE Scholarship. In addition, 58 seniors were eligible for the HOPE Scholarship.
The class demonstrated outstanding academic achievement:
- The 65 members of the Class of 2009 received 239 acceptances from 82 colleges. They will attend 33 different colleges and universities across 15 states.
- In the fall, nine seniors were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program.
- Twenty seniors are projected AP Scholars.
- Thirty seniors had 1300 or better combined SAT scores on the math and critical reading sections.
- One senior was the recipient of the Carolina Scholarship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and one senior was offered the Foundation Fellowship at the University of Georgia.
- One senior was offered appointments to three military service academies.
The class exhibited great creativity in drama, art, and music:

- Seniors have played major roles and leadership roles in drama productions for both region competition and for spring performances. One senior was selected to perform in the final showcase of the Georgia Shakespeare High School Competition this year.
- Six seniors were selected to exhibit in a show at the High Museum this year.
- Six seniors were chosen to participate in the Youth Art Month show at the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation.
- One senior orchestra member has been selected as principal cellist in the Athens Youth Symphony for the past four years.
- Seniors have been selected to play in the GMEA District #13 Honor Band Weekend.
- One senior member of Athens Academy’s Mock Trial team received the “Best Defense Lawyer Award” at the Region and State competitions.
The class led the way for service in our school with a real spirit of volunteerism:

- Seniors sponsored three Red Cross Blood Drives on campus, with a total of 99 units of blood donated for the year. Ninety percent of the class contributed to the drives in some way.
- This senior class had a high level of participation in Interact, SEEDS (environmental club), and Habitat for Humanity. Many of them are four year veterans.
- Seniors continued to strengthen the Mentor Program for the freshmen by providing valuable guidance to the younger students.
- Seniors coordinated the tenth annual Upper School Service Day in November.
- One senior was recognized by the DAR at the local and regional level as the recipient of the Good Citizen Award.
- Two seniors served on the Junior Board of Directors for the Watson-Brown Foundation.
The class excelled in athletics:

- Fifty-two athletes earned 193 varsity letters; 28 were multi-sport athletes.
- Seniors participated on varsity teams leading to one state championship (Boys Tennis), six region championships, and three region runners-up.
- In all of the sports naming an All-Region Team, seniors were members of the First Team, including football, tennis, and baseball.
- Seniors were named on the Northeast Georgia First Team in football, and two football players were named to an All-State Team.
- One senior was named as a Wendy’s Heisman State Finalist, and one senior won Scholar-Athlete Awards in football for both Region 8A and Northeast Georgia.
- In track, seniors graduate as the individual record holders in the boys’ long jump and triple jump.
