Class of 2010 Accomplishments


Twenty-two members of this class of 66 have been at Athens Academy for at least 12 years; many outstanding students have joined the group over the years.

The class demonstrated outstanding academic achievement:

  • The 66 members of the Class of 2010 received 249 acceptances from 107 colleges. They will attend 34 different colleges and universities in 16 states.
  • Forty-eight seniors were offered over $4 million in merit scholarship awards, not including the HOPE Scholarship.
  • At the end of the first semester, 54 seniors were predicted eligible for HOPE. Final figures are pending upon end of year grades.
  • In the fall, five seniors were recognized by the National Merit Program.
  • Twenty-four seniors are projected AP Scholars, and the official list will be published in the fall.
  • Twenty-one seniors had 1300 or better combined SAT scores on the math and critical reading sections.
  • One senior was named the STAR student system and region winner, and was one of only eleven students at the State STAR competition with a perfect score on the SAT.
  • One senior was offered the Morehead-Cain Scholarship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
  • One senior was offered the Foundation Fellowship at the University of Georgia.
  • Three seniors were offered the President’s Scholarship at Georgia Tech.

The class exhibited great creativity in drama, art, and music:
  • Seniors have played major roles and leadership roles in drama productions for both region & state One Act competitions and for spring performances.
  • One senior was selected as “Best Actor” and one senior was selected as “Best Actress” at the Region One Act Competition.
  • One senior was selected as “Best Defense Lawyer” for the Mock Trial Team.
  • Three seniors competed at the Second Annual Georgia Shakespeare High School Competition. One senior was selected to perform in the final showcase this year.
  • Four seniors were selected to exhibit in the High Museum show this year.
  • One senior was also chosen to participate in the Youth Art Month show at the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation in Watkinsville.
  • Four seniors had Senior Exit shows in the Student Gallery during May.
  • One senior was selected as one of 12 winners of a regional calendar contest.
  • Seniors have performed music throughout our community: Rotary Clubs, Athens Regional Medical Center, and Sons of the American Revolution.
  • One senior orchestra member has been selected as concertmaster of the Athens Youth Symphony for the past two years.
  • Seniors have participated in UGA’s January High School Music Band Festival and have been selected to play in the GMEA District #13 Honor Band Weekend.
  • Seniors have been leaders in the instrumental music program and the jazz band

The class led the way for service in our school with a real spirit of volunteerism:
  • Seniors have continued the strong service tradition by assuming the responsibility for the three campus Red Cross Blood Drives which averaged about 30 pints per drive for a total of 90 units of blood for the year. Sixty percent of the class contributed to the drives in some way during the year.
  • Seniors participated in school-wide service projects such as Holiday Angels, Can-a-Thon, Salvation Army Thanksgiving Dinner, Hands On Athens, Relief for Haiti, and Relay for Life.
  • Seniors were instrumental in leading the 11th Annual Service Day.
  • The Interact Club won “Club of the Year” for Rotary District 6910.
  • Seniors recorded more than 4,800 hours of service during their high school career.
  • This senior class had several members recognized for their leadership and service by the Oconee Rotary and Classic City Rotary Clubs.
  • This senior class had a high level of participation in Interact, SEEDS (environmental club), and Habitat for Humanity. Many of them are four-year veterans.
  • Seniors continued to strengthen the Mentor Program for the freshmen, providing valuable guidance to the younger students.
  • Under senior leadership, Interact concluded Project Pallam (a joint effort with Rotary and Interact to raise funds to build a library at the St. Jude’s School in Pallam, India, which is now complete).
  • One senior was recognized by the DAR at the local and regional level as the recipient of the Good Citizen Award.

The class excelled in athletics:
  • Fifty-one athletes earned 226 varsity letters, and 27 were multi-sport athletes.
  • Seniors participated on varsity teams leading to one state championship (girl’s tennis), 6 region/area championships, and 3 region runners-up. These accomplishments lead to Athens Academy being named the Region 8A Directors’ Cup Winners.
  • Seniors were members of the All-Region First Team in football, cross country, girl’s basketball, boy’s and girl’s tennis, boy’s and girl’s soccer and baseball.
  • Seniors were named the Athens Banner-Herald Player of the Year in girl’s soccer and tennis.
  • In track, a senior graduates as the individual record holder in the girl’s pole vault.
  • Nine seniors will be playing sports at the collegiate level.
