The Upper School Humanities Department
The Humanities Department at Athens Academy uses a curriculum designed to give students a thorough grounding in the chronology of the human past and in major interpretative questions derived from the study of that past.
Humanities courses strive to strike a balance between obtaining a systematic command of factual knowledge and the analysis of that knowledge in a critical fashion. These courses also endeavor to develop in each student the skills necessary to arrive at conclusions on the basis of an informed judgment, and to present reasons and evidence clearly in oral or written form. Teachers seek to assist students in learning to assess historical materials for relevance, reliability, and importance, while also teaching fundamental research skills. The required course of study includes world history, European history, and United States history. Electives are offered in political science, economics, and film.
