The Upper School Mathematics Department

The Athens Academy Upper School mathematics curriculum is the continuation and culmination of a process beginning in the Lower and Middle Schools, where students are introduced to increasingly broad and complex aspects of mathematics. The faculty's objective is to instill in students a body of knowledge about mathematics that will enable them to function and advance as competent, competitive students in the collegiate environment of their choice. Teachers encourage mathematics students to extend their knowledge independently through the power of analytic reasoning.

The foundation for this process lies in the efforts of the Lower and Middle School, where students begin the journey from concrete reasoning to abstractions of ideas. The sequence of required courses consists of Algebra I/Geometry/Algebra II, followed by a variety of elective courses including Advanced Placement Calculus AB and BC. Levels of instruction are tailored to an individual student’s needs and abilities to create a challenging and productive mathematics experience leading to an appreciation for the utility and beauty of mathematics.
