International Travel

Student Travel

Athens Academy students and faculty enjoy international travel for study and fun. From a beginning of two-week trips to England and Wales for eighth-grade graduates to trips today to Italy, India, Spain, and France for Upper and Middle School students, travel is a unique educational experience. One of the greatest benefits for both faculty and students is the camaraderie that develops from traveling and living together. Students regularly blog while on these trips to keep everyone at home included in the experience.

In 2011, 8 students traveled to China during spring break; in July, 2011, Athens Academy students will be visiting India.

Some trips evolve into a continuing relationship between Athens Academy students and others, such as the trip to India that sparked Project Pallam.

Faculty Travel

Pursuit of Excellence Stipends are awarded each year to four Athens Academy employees who strive to make the school a better place to learn and work. Individuals apply with a suggested project to enhance their personal and professional development and/or the climate of the school.

Recipients are selected by a committee appointed by the headmaster and division directors. Upon their return they share their experiences with the faculty and student body in person and with a written summary of the activity.

Past award winners who have traveled to international locations include:
  • Lorraine Thompson - US Fine Arts – Ellis Island, NY (pictured)
  • Anita Peng - US Math – Singapore
  • Andy Simmonds - US Math - Nigeria
