Upper School Service

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
-Mahatma Gandhi

The Service Learning program continues to be an important component of every student’s educational experience at Athens Academy. In addition to the well-established student-led clubs found on campus, Service Day is an annual event held prior to the Thanksgiving Holiday, in which the entire student body goes out into the local Athens area community and participates in various forms of service. Each grade is also responsible for developing a service oriented project, which emphasizes a particular theme carried throughout the school-year, and helps to foster relationships with students from the middle and lower schools as well.

Last year, Upper School students completed over 7,200 hours of service during the academic year. They participated in a variety of service opportunities sponsored by the school or many of the clubs affiliated with Athens Academy. Students earned approximately $10,000 working UGA Concessions in an effort to fund the entire service program, and helped to raise over $24,000 for various charitable organizations throughout the year.

If you have any questions regarding the Service Program at Athens Academy, please to not hesitate to contact Patrick Snead, Upper School Dean of Students.

Middle School Service

As with the Upper School, service is an important aspect in the lives of the middle school experience. Students perform numerous service activities throughout a school year. There are daily activities such as cleaning the Tillman Center after lunch and vacuuming and trash pick up at the end of each day. There are also seasonal projects such as the “coats and cans” drive, stocking stuffing, toiletry bags, and the Relay for Life. In addition to these yearly projects, students have taken lead roles in drives to help recent Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina victims.

Please contact Geoffrey Walton, Middle School Dean of Students, if you have any questions or suggestions regarding service in the Middle School.
