On-Campus Service

Student Leadership Positions

In addition to service opportunities that benefit the wider community, there are many ways in which Upper School students can learn service skills by working to benefit the school and their fellow students. The student government institutions that promote service in this way include Advisory Representatives, the Judiciary Board, the Mentor Program, and the Student Council.

Tutoring

After-School Tutoring takes place at Oglethorpe Elementary and is sponsored by the sophomore class. Students spend several hours, usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays, tutoring and playing with children.

Recycling

On-Campus Recycling is sponsored by our freshman class. Each week advisory groups take turns collecting paper, aluminum cans, and bottles from the collection bins located throughout the Upper School campus.

Service Learning in the Curriculum

Service learning continues to be integrated into the curricula of several disciplines. Discussion of socio-economic issues in the Humanities lends itself frequently to the encouragement of active citizenship and community service.

There are opportunities throughout the year to employ foreign language skills in the implementation of service projects. Students have engaged in Spanish conversation again this year in the Service Day Teacher Aide Project and at the Homeless Shelter dinners. The International Club has also hosted holiday parties at the local Boys & Girls Club.
