School-Wide Service Projects

The school sponsors several large-scale service opportunities throughout the school year. Service Day, Hands on Athens, DFACS Angels, Salvation Army Thanksgiving Dinner, and Relay for Life are coordinated with the help of student leaders in conjunction with the Dean of Students’ Office.

Hands on Athens

The mission of Hands on Athens is to bring people together who are dedicated to assisting low-income Athens-Clarke County homeowners in historic neighborhoods to maintain, repair, and restore their properties as part of overall neighborhood revitalization.

In 2009, 50 students and faculty participated in the 10th Annual Hands on Athens, contributing 300 hours of work to restore an historic home. Volunteers worked Friday, Saturday, and Sunday scraping, painting, doing general house repairs/carpentry, and landscaping.

Can-a-Thon

Each year, the Dean of Students challenges all grades in the Upper School to bring in the Dean's weight in cans. This is done in conjunction with the Salvation Army’s Can-a-Thon. The winning grade receives snacks during exams. Each year we have been able to donate around 1,000 pounds of food to the Salvation Army.

DFACS Angels

Advisory groups and faculty members "adopt" children to ensure they have something for the holidays. In 2009 Athens Academy also adopted 25 angels (foster children) through a project organized by the Department of Family and Children Services.

Relay for Life

Relay for Life, an overnight fundraising benefit for the American Cancer Society, takes place each year in the spring. In 2009 middle school and upper school students from Athens Academy participated and helped raise over $3,500. Fundraising efforts included t-shirts sales, luminary sales, donation solicitation, BBQ Boogie, and operating concessions stands and serving breakfast at the relay event itself.

Spartan 5k & Festival Day Help

Each year, Upper School students volunteer their time and talents to help the PSO run the Spartan 5k and Festival Day. Students man water stations, help mark the course for runners, and aid in the “Fun Run” for younger runners.

Festival Day helpers manage the concessions stand and coordinate games and booths. In 2009, the International Club sponsored an International Buffet as well. As part of their focus on service to youth, many members of the sophomore class helped with the two shifts of workers required for this event.
