Project Pallam
In 2009, Athens Academy’s Interact Club announced the completion of their two-year fund raising effort for Project Pallam. The project was the idea of the Athens Academy India Travelers, a group of students who traveled in August 2006 to a fishing village that had been struck by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. They visited with students at St. Jude’s School in Pallam and were impressed by the Indian children’s warmth, compassion, and generosity.
Upon returning to the United States, the Athens Academy group decided to raise the money to build a media center on the third floor of St. Jude’s School, giving the students access to books, computers, the internet, and even a safe haven from future storms and flooding.
Through the Interact Club and the Rotary Club of the Classic City of Athens, the group raised $23,750 to help make this dream a reality. Rotary International has provided a matching grant, and St. Jude’s School plans to start construction as soon as possible.
