Service Day – A Twelve Year Tradition
Conceived, planned, and implemented by student leaders, Service Day is an annual event in which all Upper School students participate. This year the Academy’s Tenth Annual Service Day took place on November 21st and involved nineteen different service activities on and off campus.
Approximately three hundred Upper School students each performed about five hours of community service (1,500 hours).
Recent projects have included:
- Winter Special Olympics – Basketball Skills & Tournament
- Winter Special Olympics – Bowling at Showtime Bowling Center
- Warehouse Crew working at the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia
- Preparing breakfast and bag lunches for Our Daily Bread
- SEEDS Crew trail maintenance on Birchmore Trail in Athens
- Painting at the Garnett Ridge community center
- Working at Athens Area Homeless Shelter to create a composting program and clean the kitchen
- Visiting at Senior Day Care Center at the Athens Area Council on Aging
- American Red Cross Crew decorated the windows for the holidays
- Teacher Aides at local elementary and preschools
- Musical Performance Troupe touring area retirement homes
- Drama Storytellers performing at day care centers and libraries
- Kitchen Crew preparing dishes for Thanksgiving Dinner for the Salvation Army on Hawthorne Avenue
- Fashion Show Fundraiser to benefit Athens Area Homeless Shelter
- Volunteer help at Nuci’s Space
- Volunteer help at Oconee Animal Shelter
- Work Crew at Harris Shoals Park
- Work Crew at State Botanical Gardens
- Interact members work on video projects and care boxes for Haiti
- Video Crew documenting Service Day
Each year Service Day is a successful student-led event. Service Day is very popular with students and is well received and appreciated by the various agencies with which the school works.
