College Counseling
Athens Academy, a fully accredited college preparatory school, provides a program of study acceptable to colleges across the nation. It is very important for each Academy student to recognize early that a good high school record is crucial to college admissions.
The following suggestions outline some steps in preparing for college. The College Planning Guide (given to tenth and eleventh graders on College Night) has detailed information for both parents and students.
Grade 9 -
- Read for pleasure and expand your knowledge of word usage
- Develope a broad range of interests
- Join school activities
- Explore college possibilities with the college counselors
- Check out college guidebooks and websites
- Read widely and work to improve your concentration
- Participate fully in your selected activities
- Continue reading and working hard
- Investigate colleges that may interest you through their viewbooks and websites
- Participate in fall college trips and talk with college reps who visit campus
- In spring and summer, visit colleges of particular interest
- Discuss with parents, counselors, teachers and advisors the selection of a college
- Take the SAT or ACT test
- Continue emphasis on scholastic and extracurricular achievement
- Request, complete, and file all college applications by their due date
- Send transcript requests to the guidance office at least three weeks before deadlines
- Schedule interviews at colleges if requested
- Take the SAT and/or ACT again (if needed), take AP tests in spring
