Athens Academy PSO Events & Opportunities

Events The Welcome Back Fall Coffee is held on the first day of classes. Parents are encouraged to attend to learn more about the PSO and to volunteer for PSO activities during the school year. Chairpersons of each event will have sign-up sheets and additional information. BRING YOUR CALENDAR!

Grandparents and Special Friends Day Each year in October students entertain grandparents and special friends. A morning program features musical entertainment. Following the performance all guests are invited to visit in the classrooms. This event brings many special visitors to the Athens Academy campus.

The Holiday Decorating Coffee is held in late November or early December, and parents are always eager to help with this festive event. The campus is decorated with greenery, wreaths; Christmas trees are trimmed for the Tillman Center, Bertelsmann Foundation Building Lobby and the Lower School Great Hall.

The Spartan 5K road race and Spartan Sprint race follows a course through the roads near Athens Academy and ends on the campus. Participants include Academy students, parents, and family members as well as runners from all over Georgia. For those who wish to run a shorter distance, the one mile Fun Run is held following the Spartan 5-K. Walkers are welcome in both events.

The Schacht Lecture, named in honor of former Athens Academy Trustee Elmer Schacht, is an annual lecture series held in conjunction with the National Honor Society annual induction. The PSO hosts a reception following the lecture and induction. This event is held in March.

Festival Day is held on a Saturday in late April for Athens Academy students, parents, teachers, and community visitors. The day begins with music by Pre and Lower School students followed by an opening ceremony. The Academy campus takes on a carnival atmosphere with booths of all types where children can win prizes while taking a candy bar walk, a big wheel ride, or dunking a favorite teacher or coach. Family fun is the focus of this day of activities which promote school spirit and provide a way for visitors to observe Athens Academy in a casual atmosphere.

The Golf and Tennis Tournament is held annually in October.

Faculty Appreciation Days are observed two times during the year. Parent volunteers provide a variety of special treats to show our appreciation for all of our teachers.

The Post Planning Luncheon is held on the Wednesday of Post Planning Week for all faculty and staff. A casual, catered meal is served in the Tillman Center. Employee service recognition and presentation of PSO donations to the school are part of this event.

Volunteer Helpers

Media Center Helpers are parents who assist in the media centers during school hours. These volunteers work the circulation desk, answer questions, assist students, direct visitors, and provide other help as needed by administrative staff. For additional information contact the Middle/Upper School Media Center or the Pre/Lower School Media Center.

Lunch Helpers work in the Tillman Center daily, helping with the lunch service.

PSO Projects

Cookbook Committee Our cookbook Under the Magnolias...A Tasteful Tour of Athens has been a huge success since it was published in the fall of 1999. The cookbook is available on campus and in stores all around the area. Volunteers are needed to join this success by working in marketing, sales, distribution and event planning.

Sally Foster Gift Wrap Sales Before school starts, the PSO is actively involved in our major fundraising project selling Sally Foster Gift Wrap. An information packet and samples of the gift wrap are mailed to each Academy family. The PSO raises nearly $10,000 each year for school projects from this sale. Sally Foster gifts can be ordered online at Sallyfoster.com, and you can select Athens Academy to receive credit for your purchases.

Spirit Items Sales The PSO has Athens Academy spirit items for sale during the school year. Items include auto car tags, sweatshirts, T-shirts (long and short sleeved), key chains, coffee mugs, visors and caps, aprons and much more. Order blanks are sent to each family with the school mailing and again before Christmas holidays. Spirit items are displayed in the Administration Building and the Spartan Center.

Required Reading Book Sales - Students who are rising third through eighth graders have required reading for the summer. As a service, the PSO can order these required reading books for your child and will distribute them during the last week of school.
