Cite the Source
Whenever you find information on the internet that you are going to use in a report, it is important to let others know where you found the information. In other words, you are letting people know what the source of your information is. The information you are using could be in picture or words. When you do this, you are citing the source. What you write to do this is called a citation. Here are some examples of how you would write this information for a source you find on the internet.
EXAMPLE:
If you have found answers to questions about plants
from a website called
Plants National Database put on the web by the USDA (United States Department of
Agriculture) and the NRCS(Natural Resources Conservation Service), give the following information in this order:
Name of organization or person who
publishes the site
Name of the site
The URL (website address)
Date of the last time the site was updated
Date you used the site
Sample Citation:
USDA-NRCS. The Plants National Database (http://plants.usda.gov/plants).
Dec.4,2003.
Date viewed: 12/7/03.
EXAMPLE:
If you use a picture from this website in your report
or Power Point presentation, you must give credit to
the photographer or artist who created the picture. Suppose you used a picture
of a daisy and the picture was photographed by a man named Clarence Rechenthin.
You need to give the following information about that picture in this order.
Name of the photographer or artist
Name of the publisher of the website
Sample Citation:
Clarence A. Rechnthin@USDA
Plants Database
The citation for the picture can be written at the end of your paper or Power Point presentation or in small type right under the picture. If you choose to write it at the end and you have used more than one picture, be sure you indicate which on which page or slide the picture is located.
