| Literary Device |
Line Reference |
Explanation |
| enjambment |
1, 3, 5 |
Definition: the unning on of the thought from one line, couplet, or stanza to the next without a syntactical break
Effect: the enjambment occurs between the lines of the couplets. This connects the lines fo the couplet, but keeps each couplet separate as its own thought. This arrangement contributes greatly to the rhythm of the poem. |
| polysyndeton |
8 |
Definition: the use of a number of conjuctions in close succession
Effect: the polysyndeton in line 8 causes the reader to speed up as they read that line. It also makes the list seem longer and puts emphasis on the elements of that list. Also, in this particular couplet, the words connected by the conjunctions seem to be "chained" together, just as the Soul is said to be in chains in the previous line. |
| metaphor |
29-30 |
Definition: something used to represent something else; emblem; symbol
Effect: the metaphor in line 30 describes a shipwreck as representing the a cure in the eyes of the Soul. In line 29 a Port represents death because a port is the beginning of a journey, and death is the journey to heaven. |
| personification |
36-38 |
Definition: the attribution of a personal nature or character to inanimate objects or abstract notions
Effect: the personification makes the emotions seem more active, and by the way they are personified, more sinister. They are more tangeble. |
| simile |
44 |
Definition: a figure of speech in which to unlike things are compared, often in a phrase introduced by "like" or "as"
Effect: this similie makes the Sody seem subordinate to the Soul. The Soul is the architect, which cuts down the Body and moulds it. |
| diction |
1, 12, 21, 31, 32 |
Definition: style of speaking or writing as dependent upon choice of words; language
Effect: the diction in the poem increases the strength of the message. The use of negative diction highlights the conflict between the Soul and Body. The many synonyms for sickness demostrated the painful effects that each has on the other. |
