Last spring, the Athens Academy leadership team began work on a comprehensive plan for a safe reopening of school in August. With help from faculty and trustees, the team collected data, examined plans from other schools and organizations, and consulted extensively with the Department of Public Health (DPH) and local physicians. The goal was to open school in the safest, most manageable way possible.

The result is our School Preparation Plan. Because guidelines and recommendations are ever-changing with this new and unpredictable virus, we have and will continue to update our plan frequently. Any questions or concerns regarding campus safety, learning options, or other policies should be directed to division directors or to the office of Head of School John Thorsen.

We cannot overstate our commitment to keeping our students and faculty as safe as possible while still providing an enriching and engaging learning environment. Thank you to our families for their support and partnership as we navigate these unprecedented times together.

  • COVID-19 Protocols

    COVID-19 Protocols (as of December 17, 2020)
If a parent/student or faculty/staff member completes the screening on the PikMyKid app and is NOT cleared to come to campus due to exposure, symptoms, or a positive test:
The parent/student or faculty/staff member will get an immediate alert that they may not come to campus, and the school is able to see on the dashboard that they aren’t cleared to come to campus. They should also contact the division office to report symptoms or exposure. They should also contact their primary care provider or the health department to consider testing for COVID.
    Symptoms of illness include:
    • Fever of 100.0 F (38 C) or above or symptoms of fever like alternating chills and sweating
    • New and persistent cough
    • Trouble breathing, shortness of breath or severe wheezing
    • Body aches
    • Sore throat
    • Loss of smell or taste, or change in taste
    • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
    • Headache unrelated to a previous condition
    • Quarantine/Closure Scenarios

Athens Academy will work with the DPH on specific responses to campus cases of COVID-19. The protocols outlined below will be followed, but please know that action may be taken prior to reaching these thresholds.  We will utilize data and other guidance to make decisions for the wellness of our community.  A priority is mitigating transmission in our community.  Decisions off-campus can influence this, just as much as on-campus activity, so please make healthy decisions away from Spartan Lane.

We will continue to inform the community with general updates in the weekly eSpartan. One of two messages is shared with those affected when a positive case occurs within a cohort (class, team, etc.).  One message shares the need for quarantine due to close contact, and the other asks for added vigilance and attention.  Depending on timing and circumstances, we may choose to close an area of the school for a few hours or up to a day to clean and disinfect.

    • School Gatherings Message

As we work hard to keep our students safe, we need your help. While we understand the importance of making new friends and visiting with old ones, we ask that families refrain from organizing parties and other gatherings as in years past. As always, our students’ safety is our number one priority, and we are concerned that these gatherings can pose a risk to our population and can have consequences in the days and weeks ahead. Thank you for your support and partnership with Athens Academy.
