Students Excel in Physical Fitness

Athens Academy’s students recently completed the President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Testing for the fall, and, once again, they have distinguished themselves as they work toward a high level of personal wellness! Students in grades 3-8 completed five tests that included a one-mile run, vertical sit and reach, sit-ups, push-ups and the shuttle run.

This fall, 402 students participated in the testing, of which 144 achieved Presidential recognition, which requires students to score 85% or higher on all five tests. In addition, 263 students earned a National certificate, which requires a score of 50% or higher on all five tests. In addition, sixth grader Mary Hollis Pugmire set a school record of 200 push-ups, and two students tied school records: eighth grader Julia Krehbiel tied the sit and reach record with +14 inches, and fourth grader Chloë Love Bell had a 9.1 second shuttle run.
According to Physical Education Department Chair Don Chuboff, “The students’ level of effort, diligence, enthusiasm, and support of each other was again wonderful to see. Thanks to the staff for their hard work on this and to the students who continue to pursue the ideal of excellence with honor as they work on their physical fitness.”
As part of a competition among the different grade levels, the fourth graders and the eighth graders won for the Lower and Middle School divisions, respectively, with the most students receiving Presidential or National honors. The eighth grade did especially well, with 80% of participants achieving recognition for their performance. Way to go, Spartans!
