Middle Schoolers Compete in Mathcounts

Last Saturday, February 8, eight Athens Academy Middle School students traveled to the Alliance Academy of Innovation in Cumming for the Northeast Georgia chapter competition for Mathcounts. Eighth graders Matt Can, Anvesha Das, and David Liu, and seventh graders Leo Gabarra, Kartik Menke, Zubin Tongia, Joshua Xie, and Jack Yu represented Athens Academy.

There were fifteen teams in attendance at the competition, with approximately 200 students. Athens Academy's team competed through three levels before placing eighth overall. This is the school's first team to ever compete in the chapter competition.

Mathcounts is a national middle school mathematics competition that builds problem-solving skills and fosters achievement through four levels of fun, in-person "bee" style contests.

Congratulations to Jack Yu, who placed high enough in the individual contests to advance to the state competition on March 9, 2020, at Emory University. Way to go, Spartans!
