Seniors Win Book Awards at Fall Honors Day

Congratulations to Athens Academy seniors Imana Adogu, Mae Kline, Ethan Markewitz, Davis McLanahan, and Inrgid Nilsson, each of whom was awarded a prestigious book award during last week’s Upper School Honors Day. The ceremony, which was held on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, recognized current sophomores, juniors, and seniors for their work through the end of the 2020-21 school year.
Imana Adogu received the Sewanee Book Award for Excellence in Writing, which is presented to a junior who demonstrated excellence in writing, the promise of continued outstanding writing achievement, leadership, academic scholarship, and involvement in the community. This award is presented by Sewanee: The University of the South (TN) in conjunction with the Athens Academy Upper School faculty.
 
Mae Kline received the Wellesley College Book Award, which is presented to a student who has an exceptional academic record and has made a significant personal contribution to the school community through leadership, character, and citizenship. This award is presented by Wellesley College (MA) in conjunction with the Athens Academy Upper School faculty.
 
Ethan Markewitz is the 2020-21 recipient of the Yale Book Award, which recognizes outstanding character, leadership, scholarship, and intellectual promise. This award is presented by Yale University (CT) in conjunction with the Athens Academy Upper School faculty.
 
Davis McLanahan has received the Smith College Book Award, which recognizes a student who exemplifies academic achievement, leadership qualities, and concern for others through scholarship and community service. This award is presented by Smith College (MA) in conjunction with the Athens Academy Upper School faculty.
 
Ingrid Nilsson is the 2020-21 recipient of the Harvard Book Prize, which is presented to an outstanding student who “displays excellence in scholarship and high character combined with achievement in other fields.” The winner of this award, through their intelligence and variety of achievement, exemplifies Harvard’s concern for excellence. This award is presented by Harvard University (MA) in conjunction with the Athens Academy Upper School faculty.
