The Spartans earned the respect of every adult in the dugout Thursday night as they went up against what seemed like a David-Goliath situation and arguably played one of their best games of the season.

The Raiders (21-3, 6-AAAAA) honored their seniors before the game and certainly showcased a talented group of young men. It didn’t seem to phase our Spartans, just made them more determined.

Our phenomenal freshman Henry Smith took the mound for the Spartans, and, as Coach Chuboff stated, “Played his heart out”. He went five complete innings allowing 4 runs (2 earned) while striking out five (3 in the third). Sam Johnson and Palmer Bush pitched the sixth with a combined 3 K’s. Yes, the Raiders hit the ball, and hit it well, but only crossed the plate six times.

Despite Riverwood putting their “Ace” in to pitch, the Spartans kept the came close (actually tied 3-3 after the third.). He could also hit, (putting one over the center field wall in the second), and field, (robbing Jack Thomas of what looked like a sure double in the third).

The Spartans went ahead 2-0 in the first inning when Charlie Kahlstorf (1/4) and Jack Thomas (1/4) led off the game with singles. Big John Ferguson (1/4, RBI) singled home Charlie and Henry Smith (2/3, 2 RBI’s) doubled Jack home. The third run came in the third when Palmer Bush (2/4) beat out an infield single, stole second, and came home on a single by Henry.

The outfield of Turner (The President) Trapnell, Jack, and Trent Muir once again made great catches in the outfield. In the sixth inning, Trent made a running catch in right and fired home to the Oconee Enterprise Player of the Week, Franklin Burns, who tagged out the runner at home trying to score from third base. Franklin also threw out a Raider trying to steal third in the fourth.

The atmosphere in the bus coming home was one of pride knowing the coaches and players had put up the good fight.

The Spartans have their last Region game scheduled for today at 5:30 with the possibility it will be rescheduled for tomorrow due to storms in the area.

Final Score: Athens Academy 3, Riverwood 6
