Area swimmers score big at state meets - ABH

Athens-area swimmers made an excellent accounting Saturday at the GHSA state swimming and diving championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
Several competitors won in their particular events, with three swimmers enjoying multi-medal days, including North Oconee’s Karen Zhao and Oconee County’s Olivia Della Torre and Ryan Wylie.
Della Torre brought home three first-place medals as she was first in the Class 4A-5A 100 butterfly (54.06) and the 200 individual medley (2:04) and was on the winning 200 freestyle relay with Ella Freeman, Campbell Ball and Addie Hayes (1:39).
Zhao finished first in the Class 4A-5A 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 50 seconds) and the 100-yard freestyle (50.93 seconds) and was part of the third-place 400-yard freestyle relay with Felicia Pursner, Brynn Halbach and Ansley Halbach (3:38).
Wylie also was a three-time champion, winning the Class 4A-5A 200 freestyle (1:39), the 500 freestyle (4:31) and competing on the 200 freestyle relay team with Eli Searcy, Scott Seuser and Spencer Cohen (1:29).
Clarke Central’s Lucy Yeomans won the Class 4A-5A 500 freestyle in 5:00 and finished second in the 200 freestyle in 1:52.
In addition to winning a state championship in the 200 freestyle relay, Oconee County’s Freeman finished second in the 200 breaststroke (1:06) and third in the 200 individual medley (2:09).
North Oconee’s Henry Logan was second in the Class 4A-5A 500 freestyle in 4:40.
Will Fogin of Clarke Central finished third in the Class 4A-5A 500 freestyle (4:41) and third in the 200 freestyle (1:44).
Madison County’s Macy Mullis finished third in the Class 4A-5A 50 freestyle (24.25) and the 100 backstroke (55.99).
In Class 1A-3A, Athens Academy’s Ava Kennedy finished second in the girls 50 freestyle (23.68). Eli Condie of Athens Academy finished second in the boys 100 backstroke (53.43) and Jefferson’s 400 freestyle relay team (Katherine Law, Alyssa Bartoletta, Janie Davis and Karly Bartoletta) finished third in 3:45.
In team scoring, the Westminster boys won the Class 1A-3A championship and the Westminster girls also won the Class 1A-3A crown. In Class 4A-5A, Marist won the boys state title and Blessed Trinity won the girls state championship.
