Olson reaches 100 career wins - Oconee Enterprise

Brian Olson recently reached a major career milestone.
Olson, head coach of the Athens Academy girls basketball team, earned his 100th victory last week. The benchmark win came in a 48-43 victory over rival Prince Avenue Christian School on Feb. 2.
When asked to give his thoughts on the achievement, Olson thanked the many people who helped get him and his varsity basketball program to where it is today.
“There have been so many along the way that this can be attributed to,” Olson said. “I have and have had the best assistants and mentors in the world. James Banks, Beth Sensing, Angie Johnson and Lauren Moran all have been a part of our program and helped us grow. Our [athletic director], Kevin Petroski, has been supportive in our vision as well as John Thorsen, our Head of School. Our feeder league coaches, middle school coaches and parents are also a big part of this.”
Olson praised the hard work of the players who have come through the program during his tenure as the Lady Spartans’ head coach.
The program’s success has built over the last few years, Olson said. Last Tuesday’s historic win was the culmination of that progress and development.
“The foundation that was established by the very first team I coached paved the way for where we are now and I appreciate every player that has been a part of the Spartan Family,” Olson said. “We are 72-31 in the last four seasons and to have this milestone achieved with this team is very special. We will forever be connected in this accomplishment.”
As he routinely does, Olson turned the attention to his players.
Olson said that although the on-court strides are impressive and noteworthy, he cares most about seeing his players grow away from the game.
“The game of basketball is very special to me, but more importantly these girls and who they are as people and what they will give back to others in the years to come is what is the most gratifying,” Olson said.
Also over the last week, Olson learned that he was named co-coach of the year for Region 8-A-Private. He was recognized alongside the other co-coach of the year, Brandy Corbett from Tallulah Falls.
Athens Academy and Tallulah Falls were the top teams in the region this year, losing only one region game – against each other.
Those teams and the rest of Region 8-A-Private started up their region tournament this week. Check next week’s edition of The Oconee Enterprise for recaps from the tournament.
Regardless of the result from the region tournament, Olson and the Lady Spartans are guaranteed a spot in the state playoffs.
This marks the team’s fifth consecutive year reaching the state tournament.
