Athens Academy girls tennis turns things around - Oconee Enterprise

The Athens Academy girls tennis team has found recent success.
The Lady Spartans’ resurgence was helped by the additions of Meredith Reynolds after the basketball season and Carson Will from injury. The Lady Spartans are still missing Katheryn Nichols due to sickness.
Reynolds plays 1 singles for the Spartans and Nichols plays 2 singles. Will is a doubles player.
Athens Academy held a 2-8 record entering this week after earning both of its wins last week.
The Lady Spartans defeated region opponents Tallulah Falls 4-1 last Tuesday and Athens Christian 5-0 last Thursday.
“The girls team has been struggling a bit, but they're just getting better and better every day,” Spartans head coach Jami Cashin said. “They're making improvements and bonding helps. They’ve been making great strides, but we were missing players all in the beginning of the season and we're starting to get them back. It was tough to be missing our three best players.”
Cashin made the start of her team’s season intentionally difficult.
The girls lost to Oconee County, Pace Academy, North Oconee, Prince Avenue Christian and Mill Creek all before traveling to the coast for the Jekyll Jam tournament.
“It was great for them and it fires them up” Cashin said. “It shows them where they want to get to. I like to do that very early in the season to kind of set the tone and just let them see what they need to achieve.”
Cashin also planned some tough matches at the end of the season to keep her players focused ahead of the state playoffs.
“At that point in the season, you're just playing each other over and over again,” Cashin said. “It's not as intense, and so I've got some really hard matches at the end so that they can really see what they have to do if they’re going to advance in state.”
If the Spartans are going to go far, they will need to keep rolling and everyone needs to step up.
“Our line two singles, she's been sick, and she probably won't be back this season,” Carson Will said. “But after me and Meredith came back, I think the team really came together, and we got our orders figured out and our positions figured out and we started winning.”
Will plays 1 doubles and is the only senior on the Athens Academy team. The Lady Spartans have a core group of five juniors, three sophomores and one freshman.
The Spartans are on spring break this week, which will allow the team’s players to rest up. Will is excited to go to the Keys with the rest of her senior class.
“I'm definitely bringing my racquets to the Keys,” Will said. “I'm definitely going to try and get out there, but I think the worst thing about the spring break is going away from practice. I love tennis, and just looking forward to get back.”
The Lady Spartans’ schedule slows down after they return from break.
They will play Morgan County next at home on Wednesday, March 17, and then they will host region opponent Loganville Christian Academy for the first time on Thursday, March 25.
