Pitching, Offense, Defense Excel in Victory for Athens Academy Spartans

The weather was windy and cold, but the Spartans were warmed up and focused as the pitching, offense and defense came together for a shutout victory.  Sixteen players played in the game.

Pitching:  Palmer Bush, Om Patel and Sam Johnson took the mound for the Spartans allowing no runs on 1 hit, while striking out 8 (in four innings)!   Palmer picked up the win.  In the third inning, it took Om 11 pitches for one batter, but he won the battle with a strikeout.

Offense:  Stats are impressive.  Asa Drudge 1/3, RBI, run,  Palmer 1/4, RBI, double, 4 runs, Henry Smith 1/3, 2 RBI’s, run, John Ferguson 2/4, 4 RBI’s, 2 runs, 2 doubles, Will Thomas, 1/3, 2 RBI’s, Pratt Ferguson 2/4, RBI, run, Sam Bush 2 runs, RBI, Will Morris, 2/2, RBI, run, double, Steven Holder run, and Michael Klass run.  “Big John” came very close to his first HomeRun as his hard hit fly ball hit halfway up the left field fence.  Asa did a great job as the lead off batter.

Defense:  Defense was outstanding with no errors.  Playing outfield was challenging with the high winds.  Three plays stand out:   Sam J. making an excellent block behind the plate in the first, Asa showcasing his speed with a catch in center field to end the game, and Sam Bush, with the wind swirling, playing second base, chased down a fly ball between center and right field for the third out of the fourth inning.

Sam J. proved to be “Mr. Versatility” playing catcher, pitcher, and third base.

Once again, our wonderful fans were cheering our Spartans on to victory.

The Spartans will open up their region play Tuesday against Prince Avenue at home.

Final Score:  Mt. Pisgah 0, Athens Academy 14
