AOTW: Colzie caps off compelling career with Spartans - Oconee Enterprise

One of the most decorated athletes to come from the Oconee County area recently capped off his career in stylish fashion.
Deion Colzie, who last weekend graduated from Athens Academy, leaves behind a longstanding legacy on the football field. That legacy and his ability earned him a scholarship and allowed him to join his dream program: Notre Dame.
But Colzie also starred on the boys basketball team during his four years as a Spartan.
And once that was over, he turned his attention to the track and field season.
That’s where Colzie recently put an exclamation point on his time in green and white.
In April, Colzie won the Class A-Private Area 6 high jump with a mark of 6-6. He was also part of the area 4x100-meter relay championship alongside teammates Aidan Saeed, Preston Darden and Austin McGee. They completed that event in 43.34.
Colzie then turned his focus to the Class A-Private state championship meet held across May 14-15 in Powder Springs. He made records twice while competing at state.
In the high jump, Colzie finished second in the finals at 6-8. That set a new program record.
During the preliminaries, Colzie competed in the 100-meter dash and timed in at 10.82, also setting an all-time record at Athens Academy. That was only the fifth time Colzie ever participated in the event.
Colzie finished fourth in the 100-meter dash finals, coming in at 10.95. The 4x100-meter relay team clocked in at 43.67, good for fifth in the state.
The stellar track and field season came after Colzie overcame nagging injuries that bothered him during football and basketball, according to assistant coach Robert Hill.
“I have a friend who’s an ex-college runner and brought him into practice to help Deion with a few little markers in the 100,” Hill recently said in an article on the Notre Dame Insider website. “How to hold his arms, how to hold his chest, how to come out of the blocks and that kind of thing. But there really wasn’t much time to practice and perfect that. I can only imagine how things might have turned out if we did.”
