Victory over Prince Avenue

Faced with back-to-back games, the Athens Academy middle school boys’ soccer team dressed out all 21 healthy roster players to face Prince Avenue at home on Thursday night.

The Spartans had control of the game right from the start, as anticipated because the home team is fortunate to have a more experienced and talented squad, with many of the boys playing year-round.

Wasting no time, Brooks Chisolm scored on a Wally Terrell assist and Oliver Yates added another goal on a brilliant floating through-ball by Miles Pringle to put the Spartans up 2-0 with only nine minutes expired. However, it took until right before intermission for the next score. Miles added to his goal total and the Spartans led 3-0 at halftime.

After a pep talk in the fieldhouse, the coaches decided to rest many of the starters and allow the substitutes to play the remainder of the game, which they did admirably. For example, the much-improved John Wolfe McLean made a number of impressive saves and Cy Munday showed some fancy footwork and ball-handling skills.

Although, the Wolverines scored with less than five minutes remaining, which made things more interesting, the Spartans had the game in hand. Final score: 3-1. The boys earned a much-deserved day off on Friday as they prepare for the remaining four games of the season.

Go Spartans!
