Valiant Effort in Away Loss

On yet another chilly, windy “spring” day, the short-handed Spartans traveled down Hog Mountain Road to compete against Oconee County Middle School.

Many of the younger players on the squad received quality playing time, while seven talented eighth graders helped propel the junior varsity team to a 5-1 win that night. Indeed, it was a night where one would rather be running around on the field than sitting the bench.

The Braves quickly went up 2-0 and took a 3-0 lead at halftime. However, the Spartans were not deterred and eventually warmed up in the second half.

Without a doubt, the two highlights of the game included Jack Heil’s masterful free kick. Jack had been studying the wind throughout the match and launched a strike from 30-yards out that sailed, then curved over the goalkeeper’s outstretched hands into the back of the net. Beautiful!

Then, with only a few minutes remaining, Ohm Patel scored on a breakaway sprint that ended with a toe-poke goal and unfettered elation by the visiting Spartan team and fans. GOOOAAAAALLL!

Although the final was 7-2, the boys held their heads high as they left the field to their supportive parents and warm vehicles.
