Learning Support through RISE: Resources, Instructional Supports, and Enhancement
At Athens Academy, we believe that every student learns in unique and valuable ways. When learning differences affect performance, the RISE program provides resources, instructional support, and enhancement strategies to help students reach their full potential. Through academic accommodations, specialized literacy instruction, tutoring, and executive function support, RISE helps students become confident, independent learners ready to succeed in school and beyond.

  • RISE Support in Lower School (Grades 1-4)

    Academic Accommodations
Guided by psychoeducational evaluations and aligned with college entrance testing organizations such as ACT and College Board, Athens Academy partners with families to provide students with reasonable academic accommodations that help them demonstrate their best work. Accommodations such as extended time on assessments, a low-distraction testing environment, or preferential seating help students build confidence and develop academic knowledge and skills. Students are guided on how to use accommodations effectively and advocate for themselves, preparing them for success both in school and beyond.

LIFT: Literacy Intervention & Foundations Team
For students at risk or diagnosed with language-based learning differences (such as a reading disorder or dyslexia), LIFT provides targeted, individualized instruction through a modified language arts curriculum. Through explicit, targeted, and multisensory instruction students are taught decoding and encoding strategies in order to access and gain meaning from text. Grounded in research-based programs such as Orton-Gillingham, Hill, and Wilson, our learning specialists provide daily or bi-weekly sessions that strengthen literacy and foundational academic skills. This fee-based program typically spans two to three years, equipping students with the tools to thrive as independent readers and learners.

    Academic Tutoring
In the early years, timely support can make a lasting difference. Academic tutoring connects students with skilled instructors who reinforce classroom learning, strengthen foundational skills, and help students develop strong study habits. Support may be short-term or ongoing, depending on the student’s needs, and always takes place in close partnership with classroom teachers and families. A diagnosed learning difference is not required to access tutoring services. This fee-based opportunity is available to any student throughout their years at Athens Academy.
  • Rise Support in Middle School (Grades 5-8)

Students in middle school LIFT classes begin to shift the focus from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” Grounded in research-based programs such as Orton-Gillingham, Hill, and Wilson, our learning specialists provide daily or bi-weekly sessions that strengthen literacy and foundational academic skills. This fee-based program typically spans two to three years, equipping students with the tools to thrive as independent readers and learners.

    Academic Tutoring
As coursework becomes more complex, students may need additional support to reinforce skills and strengthen study habits. Tutoring sessions help with everything from subject-specific challenges to general academic strategies, always in coordination with classroom expectations. A diagnosed learning difference is not required to access tutoring services. This fee-based opportunity is available to any student throughout their years at Athens Academy.

Learning to Learn & Executive Function
In middle school, all students take a course designed to support and build executive function skills such as organization, prioritization, and self-monitoring. Learning to Learn empowers students to become active, engaged learners who make meaningful connections with new material. Students explore metacognition—learning to “think about their thinking”—while also building essential executive functioning skills such as organization, self-monitoring, working memory, goal setting, cognitive flexibility, and prioritization. This executive function priority is woven throughout middle school where specialists collaborate with teachers and advisors to help students balance academic and personal responsibilities with growing independence.
  • Rise Support in Upper School (Grades 9-12)

    Academic Accommodations
Guided by psychoeducational evaluations and aligned with college entrance testing organizations such as ACT and College Board, Athens Academy partners with families to provide students with reasonable academic accommodations that help them demonstrate their best work. Accommodations such as extended time on assessments, a low-distraction testing environment, or preferential seating help students build confidence and develop academic knowledge and skills. Students are guided on how to use accommodations effectively and advocate for themselves, preparing them for success both in school and beyond. Additionally, specialists provide support to students as they apply for accommodations for SAT, ACT, and AP tests.

    Academic Tutoring
Academic tutoring is available for Upper School students who seek additional reinforcement in particular subjects or in developing effective study and test-preparation strategies.  A diagnosed learning difference is not required to access tutoring services. This fee-based opportunity is available to any student throughout their years at Athens Academy.

    Tutorials, Advisory & Seminar
At Athens Academy, teachers and advisors take a central role in supporting the Upper School students leading up to graduation and their academic adventures at the university level. Students work one-on-one and in small groups with teachers and academic coaches to build executive functioning, time management, and self-advocacy skills. Support is flexible and adaptive, helping students balance challenging academic schedules while developing independence.
Getting Started
Parents play a vital role as partners in their child’s learning journey. When concerns arise about learning differences, academic struggles, or skill development, partnership between teachers, resource specialists, and parents is critical. In some cases, a psychoeducational evaluation with a licensed private psychologist is an important step. This evaluation provides the foundation for tailoring RISE services to each student’s unique needs, ensuring that every learner at Athens Academy has the opportunity to rise to their full potential.
