ATHENS ACADEMY 58, ATHENS CHRISTIAN 0: At Eagle Field, the Spartans – ranked No. 1 in Class A Private – got six touchdowns from quarterback Palmer Bush as they posted the largest margin of victory over the Eagles in the two teams’ 17-year series.
Athens Academy took a 28-0 lead in the first quarter as Bush tossed a 62-yard pass to Notre Dame commit Deion Colzie on the first play of the game, Kurt Knisely scored on a short run, Bush tossed a 29-yard scoring strike to Kale Anderson and a 20-yard pass to Knisely with 24 seconds left in the period.
In the second quarter, Bush tossed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Hugh Laughlin, scored on a 1-yard run and tossed a scoring pass to Trevaris Willis.
Athens Academy’s only score of the second half was a 19-yard run by Gio Newsome with 15 seconds left in the game.
The Spartans (7-0, 2-0 in Region 8-A and No. 4 in the GHSA power ratings) will host Providence Christian at 7:30 p.m, Friday. Athens Christian (2-5, 0-2) will host George Walton at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
