Athens Academy Drama Department Director Lorraine Thompson and her Drama Club students have been busy this fall, leading and participating in a variety of service projects both locally and nationally. Last week, the club gathered to create and decorate holiday cards for residents at High Shoals Health and Rehabilitation Center and Morningside of Athens. Club President Lizzie Walker (Class of 2021) organized and led the card decorating party and then delivered the cards afterward.
Earlier this week, Drama Club members purchased toiletries, cleaning supplies, diapers, hat, gloves, and more for The Sparrow's Nest and the Athens Area Homeless Shelter. Every year the club raises money to support this project during the holidays.
In addition to her work with the Drama Club, Ms. Thompson has also started a Home Learner Connections (HLC) service group for Athens Academy students who have opted for distance learning this fall. Earlier in the school year the HLC group and the Drama Club completed thirteen fleece blankets for The Linus Project, a non-profit organization providing homemade blankets to children in need. The HLC group is now working on a “Birthday Card Box” service project, making a year’s worth of birthday cards for residents in several local retirement facilities. Each hand-decorated card will contain a special “It’s My Birthday” sticker to help the individual recipient celebrate.
According to senior An’an Shen, “This is a great opportunity for me to participate in a group activity. I mean, it’s the only school activity that I’m able to engage in since I am an at-home learner. I appreciate how Ms. Thompson and the Drama Club bring us together. I’m looking forward to more projects!”
Junior Harper Purcell agrees: “Even though I am no longer an online learner, I really love the opportunity to do something in the community in a safe (and fun!) environment.”
