Seniors Recognized for Athletic Achievements

During Athens Academy’s Honors Day in May, Head of School John Thorsen and Upper School Director Susan Zalac were pleased to recognize several members of the Class of 2021 for their outstanding performance as student-athletes during their Upper School years. The awards, and those who received them, include:
The Andrew B. Swan Award: Meg Williams
The G. William Thurston Athletic Award: Deion Colzie & Riley Friesen
The Scholar-Athlete Award: Kate Kleiber & Lewis Scruggs
The Andrew B. Swan Award: Meg Williams
This award is named in honor of Drew Swan, an Athens Academy student athlete and 2017 graduate who, exhibiting perseverance, a tireless work ethic, and a generosity of spirit, came to personify the sporting ideal of engaging in intense competition while maintaining respect and appreciation for one’s opponents. Meg is the daughter of Mark and Sue Williams of Athens, and she will attend Sewanee: The University of the South this fall.
 
The G. William Thurston Athletic Award: Deion Colzie & Riley Friesen
This award is presented to a senior boy and girl athlete whose keen sense of sportsmanship combined with superior athletic skill reflects the merits of Mr. Thurston.  These athletes consistently portray competitive excellence with honor in attitude, effort, and performance.
  • Deion Colzie is the son of Yolanda Jackson and Jeff Colzie of Grovetown. He will attend the University of Notre Dame, where he is signed to play football.
  • Riley is the daughter of Von and Christy Friesen of Athens. She will attend the College of William and Mary, where she is signed to play soccer.
     
    The Scholar-Athlete Award: Kate Kleiber & Lewis Scruggs
    This award is presented to a senior boy and girl who have achieved outstanding records in both academics and athletics.
    • Kate Kleiber is the daughter of Ryan and Emily Kleiber of Athens. She will attend Georgia Tech this fall.
    • Lewis Scruggs is the son of Lanier and Carrie Scruggs of Athens. He will also attend Georgia Tech this fall.
