Spartans Fight to Bitter End

The atmosphere was like the seventh game of the World Series with high energy, a strong competitive spirit, lots of good hitting, pitching, defense, and strong senior leadership. The game went down to the wire with the Spartans going into the bottom of the seventh with a lead. As luck would have it, the Wolverines scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the victory. There aren't enough accolades or praise that can be given to this team. The Spartans came to play, and play they did.

The Spartans faced the best of the Wolverine pitchers and scored 10 runs on 12 hits...very impressive.

Every person in the dugout made positive contributions.
Sam Clements: 2/4, 2 runs, 2 SB, a walk; was exceptional in the outfield, and provided outstanding leadership
Hayden Hudson: pitched 6 solid innings, striking out 7, went 1/2 at the plate, walked twice, stole a base
Will Haver: came in to run for Hayden in the 2nd, 4th and 7th, scored twice
Drew Richardson: once again displayed his amazing skill at the catcher's position, at the plate went 2/4, stole a base, had 3 RBI's, and a crucial sac bunt
Will Miller: sizzling hot with 3 doubles, 2 RBI's, and came close to going yard.
Wyatt Settles: played excellent shortstop and went to third when Connor was hurt
Charlie Newcomer: 1/3, BB, run, SB, made another spectacular catch in right field, provided outstanding leadership
Will Cox: 3 walks, SB, run, another wonderful senior
S.L. Mitchell: 1/3, SB, run, 2 RBI's, brings true meaning to "Base Hit, Ball 4"
Connor McCleary: performed the suicide squeeze perfectly, scored a run
Will Corry: ran for Drew in the 2nd, came in for Connor and made an excellent catch in right field
Matthew Mastandrea: single in the fourth, stolen base, run, as solid as they come at first base
Will Divers: fires up the dugout and truly earns the name "coach"
Christopher Fernandez: great spirit and positive attitude, always ready to play and help the team any way he can, a senior
Aaron Conley: extremely knowledgeable, great at getting the other teams signs, a senior
Jordan Johnson and Caroline Sanders: they are simply amazing... Not only did they keep the books, but were encouraging and positive with every player

Coaches Kane, Chuboff, Nonni, Thorne, and Thomas were always focused and intent on helping and encouraging each of the players to achieve their personal best, they certainly succeeded

Special thanks to DeeAnn Cox and Lisa Hudson for serving as Team Mothers. Joe Clements filled the web page with action filled shots of the team. Tom Reigle filled in many games for his wife this year and loved every minute. The parents especially deserve special recognition for their positive support. The stands were always full, whether we were at beautiful Mastandrea Stadium or in the mountains of Towns County.

It is always difficult to write the last game summary. Although the season ended with a loss in the closest of games, as the expression goes, "they left it all on the field" and the coaches, parents, friends, are extremely proud of them. This Spartan team was very special and the memories and relationships will be treasured by all.

Final Score: Athens Academy 10, Prince Avenue 11
