According to their website, the purpose of the Regions Directors Cup is to “recognize those athletic departments in all GHSA classifications who have excelled and shown superior performance.” The GADA assigns points to schools for the top eight scoring sports in which it participates. Schools are then ranked within their classification size by their point totals.

The last year Athens Academy’s girls’ athletic program finished in first place was 2002-03, and the last year the school finished in second place overall was 2009-10.

In total, Athens Academy has won the Class A Directors Cup three times and has finished in second place five times since the award's inception in 1999-00. Stuart Todd, former athletic director for Athens Academy, was instrumental in developing and implementing the award and its criteria while serving with the GADA.
