  • Class A completely separated - Oconee Enterprise

    Changes are coming to Class A sports at the start of the 2020-2021 calendar year.
    Class A Public and Private schools will be completely separated and placed in 4-team regions to decide region championships, according the Georgia High School Association.
    Private schools will still be allowed and encouraged to compete against public schools but won’t be competing against them for region championships as they have since 2012 when Class A was split into two different classifications to even the playing field between public and private schools.
     
    The GHSA also made some modifications to the Power Ratings’ system.
    Moving forward, the Power Ratings will still be kept, but it will only be affected by games featuring private schools against private schools from Class A.
    In both Class A Private and Class A Public, 32 schools will earn playoff berths with one region being designated as a wildcard region.
     
    What does it mean?
    Athens Academy and Prince Avenue Christian School may be faced with longer travel and a more expensive budget for the school year.

  • Remember when Georgia advanced to the Final Four? - AJC

    Auburn and Texas Tech received much praise over the weekend after advancing to the Final Four for the first time in school history.
     
    It’s been a few years ago - 36 to be exact - but when Georgia advanced to its one and only Final Four, it was in its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance.
    Yes, Final Four in its first tournament appearance in 1983 - the season after Dominique Wilkins left for the NBA.
     
    Coach Hugh Durham’s SEC Championship squad was the No. 4 seed in the East Region and escaped with a 56-54 win over VCU in its tournament opener. The Bulldogs then defeated No. 2 St. John’s 70-67 behind 27 points from senior Terry Fair and top-seed North Carolina 82-77 in the region final behind 20 points from junior James Banks.
    “The day before we played North Carolina, Sam Perkins said he didn't know what conference Georgia was in. We kind of took it personally,” Banks recalled in an 2013 AJC article on the 30th anniversary of the Final Four team. “We decided on a self-imposed curfew. We said, "We're going to bed early." We didn't want anyone to disrespect our program.
    Added Banks, “When we got back to Athens (from the regional site of Syracuse, N.Y.), there were 3,000 to 4,000 people welcoming us at the airport. It was crazy. I was almost in tears.”
     
    Georgia’s dream run ended on April 2, 1983 with a 67-60 loss to N.C. State in Albuquerque, N.M. - the same N.C. State which upset heavily-favored Houston 54-52 two nights later in the 1983 championship game.
    “We were happy just to be going to the Final Four. We were a good, solid team that had some luck,” Banks recalled. “We just soaked it all in out there. By the time we woke up and said we could win this thing, it was too late.”

    These winter sports athletes proved to be the very best on and off of the field, and were nominated as the Best of ABH Preps for winter sports. Congratulations to senior Lawrence Jang for being named the  Boys Basketball Player of the Year!

    Sophomores Eli Condie (Swim & Dive) and Ali Rumpel (Girls Basketball) were nominated for the Most Versatile Player award. Senior Lawrence Jang (Boys Basketball) was nominated for the Academic Athlete of the Year award. Senior Wesley Cline (Swim & Dive) was nominated for the Comeback Player of the Year award. Freshman Jaila-Salley Barnett (Girls Basketball) was nominated for the Freshman of the Year award.   • Spartans shake off slow start to advance - Oconee Enterprise

    Survive and advance. It doesn’t have to be easy or pretty. We’ve all heard the clichés when it comes to playoffs in any sport.
    Athens Academy’s boys basketball team exhausted as many of those clichés as they possibly could on their way to a 44-35 win over Calvary Day that advanced the Spartans to the Class A Private Sweet 16.
    The Spartans expected a tough, typical state playoff style game. They found themselves trailing at the end of the first two quarters and tied at the end of the third quarter.
    “We expected a really good game plan from them and they brought it,” Spartans’ head coach Ed Wilson said. “They did some triangle and two which we knew they had. They did a good job on our shooters and they forced us to be kind a different kind of offense. I give them a lot of credit; they did a good job defensively on us. I thought we sped them up at times. I thought we turned them over enough to cause them some problems. We were happy about our defense but certainly our offense wasn’t perfect. We’ll get back to work on Monday and figure it all out.”
    The Spartans found a way to outscore the Cavaliers 16-7 over the final eight minutes of the contest. Lawrence Jang finished the night with 14 points. Barrett McClanahan scored 11 points. Sophomore forwards Deion Colzie and Hugh Laughlin both put in seven points apiece.
    The Spartans have had offensive outburst this season scoring as many as 73 points just last week. The Spartans have scorers capable of large scoring outbursts. Saturday, Wilson applauded his team’s defensive effort as the key to their first round win.
    “If you go down and miss a bucket on offense, it’s terrible, but you’ve got to stop people,” Wilson said. “We talk about that all the time. We get more frustrated with kids at any moment on the defensive end. We take a lot of pride in our defense. We saw tonight that there were some lapses in the first quarter and in the second quarter and we cleaned it up. I was proud of those kids for that. We have to be a good defensive team. We’re not built to be a great offensive team. We don’t have enough of the great characteristics of a great offensive team.”
    The Spartans’ next playoff game took place on Wednesday after The Oconee Enterprise’s deadline as the Spartans faced Savannah Country Day. Saturday’s win sent the Spartans to Savannah with a little pep in their step after a disappointing finish in last week’s Region 8A tournament.

  • All-Star Teams Named - Prep RoundUp (ABH)

    ALL-STAR TEAMS NAMED: The rosters for the Clarke-Oconee All-Star game, set for Saturday, March 16 (girls at 6 p.m., boys at 7:30 p.m.) at Athens Christian, were announced Monday.
    For the girls, Team Burgess (coached by Oconee County’s Thad Burgess) will consist of Mikaylyn Glover and Samiha Rittenberry of Clarke Central, Yasmen Davenport and Jayla Allen of Cedar Shoals, Ansley Hall of North Oconee, Madison Britt of Prince Avenue Christian, Omeka Bhatia of Monsignor Donovan and Sybille Foucart, Vanessa Sekandi and LaNya Scott of Oconee County.

    Team Beacham (coached by Athens Christian’s Van Beacham) will include Greer Moseley of Athens Academy, Toria Smith and Kelijah Evans of Clarke Central, Jeanetta Elder of Cedar Shoals, Sara English of Oconee County, Tatum Thompson of North Oconee, Sally Schutz of Westminster Christian, Janie Henderson of Prince Avenue Christian, and Emma Deal and Julia Peroni of Oconee County.

    For the boys, Team Burgess will include John Sims and Will Shuford of Oconee County, Eric Franklin and Quincy Canty of Cedar Shoals, Andrew Cheek of Prince Avenue Christian, Jaiquez Smith Demetrius Glenn and Kenzavion Watson of Clarke Central, Matt Marvel of Athens Academy and Adam Weynand of North Oconee.

         With an emphasis on the development of complete basketball players, the programs have enjoyed a successful history. Both boys’ and girls’ programs have a track record of multiple Region Championships and deep playoff runs.
         So that our athletes receive quality instruction with a realistic opportunity for playing time, the size of teams in some sports is limited. Students "try out" for teams. Although there is no guarantee that a student will be selected for a specific team, the number and variety of offerings provide many opportunities for each player.
